Welcome to Lauren's English Portfolio
I am an English major who for some time has wondered about, writing without a purpose. Being in The Journalistic Essay class has helped me narrow my view and help draw out my passion. I strive to be a children's book writer and through reading and writing in  my senior year I am  finally finding my voice . Although I write seriously as well, you will find that my work comes more from my personality rather than formality.

The Blogs:

The Blogs included are centered around David K. Shipler's The Working Poor: Invisible in America. My response to each selected reading came from a very personal place which is why I believe they are the best representation of my work. The more a reader can connect to the text, the more they can open up in their writing, which is what I felt happened when reflecting on this book. The reader of these blogs will understand me more and be able to see the connections I have made through my own personal readings.

The Writings:

The Writings within this portfolio are ones that I've stood by from the beginning. The first is a series of proposed questions for a Profile Piece I had written. These questions helped shape my skills as an interviewer and opened me up to explore more into my subject. The second writing is a piece of advice given from the author of my Feature Writing textbook. The advice to "simplify" I think is crucial to any writer and to share it with all writers and readers is important, which is why I chose to include it.  These writings best demonstrate my thought process and what I hold to value as a reader and a writer.

Improvements

This has been a semester for a lot of new skills to be learned. My formal writing has been stretched into many different new categories that helped me grow as a writer. I gained new understanding of different areas of writings, but I do need a lot of practice!  I have improved by diligently working on assignments and trying to make them the best possible I feel I can produce. Through the long nights and tiresome revisions, I am always proud of my work!

Learning & the Future

Throughout the course of this semester I have grown tremendously as an active reader and writer. The Journalistic Essay course sharpened my skills in newspaper and magazine feature writing, interviewing, and understanding and revising my own work. Although I have felt I have gained many new skills I know there is still a long open road waiting for me. I would like to continue my study of newspaper and magazine writing to really refine my skills to become a successful writer in whatever path I chose or stumble upon.
